Dear friends, lovers of Roma music and dance…

I would like to invite you all to our special 10 day international workshop GYPSY CELEBRATION from the 18th – 28th of August 2008 in the beautiful surroundings of the Moravian countryside at Pension Galerie in Jedlova, Czech Republic.

This summer, for the first time in several years, you will once again have the opportunity to work closely with me over a period of 10 days. I dedicate this workshop to all those who wish to dive into my work deeper and longer. I will be leading and teaching, singing and celebrating with you. Some days and evenings I invite some of our guests to share their songs and Roma culture with you.

For those of you who love and have an interest in Roma music, songs, dance, culture or history you have the chance to join all of us, who have the need to celebrate life, to celebrate that we are here, that we are all different, and that we can inspire each other, and thanks to our meeting we can learn something new, something that no other person can teach us. Throughout these 10 days together, we are given the chance to recognize and experience beautiful things that we later take back to our homes deep in our hearts.

For all of you that come to the Gypsy Celebration Festival at Svojanov Castle each year, we have this invitation for this special workshop. Even though the Festival will not be taking place this year we will be somewhere around the place where we started 7 years ago, we will be together…..

Days full of songs, music and dance under the direction of Ida Kelarova and her guests:

Desiderius (Dežo) Dužda and Marie (Maruška) Duždová will be introducing contemporary Roma songs. Maruška performed and taught with us for many years in the past and those who have worked with Maruška before will welcome the opportunity to work with her once again.
Kaľi Čercheň – a male vocal trio from the Roma theatre group Romathan (Košice, SR) will share their traditional Slovak-Russian songs.
Čilágos – This Roma vocal group will spend a day and evening sharing their traditional songs with us.
Sendrei Band – A traditional Slovak Roma group will share some of their songs with us.
Oto Bunda and Ivanka Olahová – will teach you some traditional Roma dances …
And many others……………
Application form

Everyone who sings creates. For a song is a means of expressing ones truth, a way of searching for the voice in the depths of ones inner most self. This is especially true for Roma people. So I believe that we should learn more of the meaning of their songs, if for no other reason than to find a way of expressing our everyday pain and joy through our own song.
The tones and the rhythm in the songs are just a path to keep us from straying. We may walk quicker or slower, or just stay a while to lie in the grass… in tune with our own mood.
The Roma people have always known this, so let their songs teach us too.

When my father died, I couldn’t cry, I sang. I was haunted by what I was told as a child:
“open your heart, open your voice, don’t be afraid of anything and sing!”

Workshop Fee:
€720 The workshop fee includes admission, full board, and accommodation (up to 20 people)
€380 The fee includes admission only (no board or accommodation) – there is a camping area for up to 8 people
