“Singing” means to hear a voice that nobody else can hear. “Listening” means to hear a voice which the singer does not hear. “Art” is the expression of interference of these two voices.
But there is a third voice, which one can hear inside oneself, a distant voice that measures art and life with pain and joy, with loneliness and fellowship, being close and far away… and in the wound, which is healed, but never quite closed, lies what is unusual and original in the work of a human being.
We welcome you to the life and music of Ida Kelarová.
Everyone who sings, creates. For a song is a means of expressing one’s truth, a way of searching for the voice in the depths of one’s innermost self. This is especially true of the Roma people.
Therefore I believe that we should learn more of the meaning of their songs, if for no other reason than to find a way of expressing our everyday pain and joy through our own song.
The tones and rhythms in the songs are just a path to keep us from straying. We may walk quicker or slower, or stay awhile to lie in the grass… in tune with our own mood. The Roma people have always known this, so let their songs teach us too.
I hope our songs will bring you to new sources of power and inspiration. Whoever sings from the heart and with feeling every note of our songs, will find great love in himself.
Our songs and music are for everybody. We are connected. Music has united us. Our music is dedicated to all of you who have sung with us and all of you who are on a journey in search of yourself.
